9. When do I need a certified flood hazard determination?

When a lender processes a loan for a residential structure, they may be federally required to make a flood hazard determination. A third party, known as a flood determination company, usually conducts these determinations. The findings are submitted using a Standard Flood Hazard Determination Form. If, after review of the results, you feel that a need exists to dispute the determination, you have three options:

  1. Provide more accurate structure and parcel location information to the map determination company to see if it will revise its determination. (This would probably be through the lender.)
  2. Request a Flood Hazard Determination Review from FEMA.
  3. Request a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) from FEMA. The required forms, MT-1 or MT-EZ, may be ordered by calling the FEMA Map Service Center at 800/358-9616 or obtained here. Technical assistance for completing the forms may be received from the FEMA Map Assistance Center, toll free, at 877-FEMA-MAP (877-336-2627).

Technical FAQ

1. Can I print or save the FloodScape™ maps?

Yes. The reason behind creating these images in PDF format was to create a true document that could be filed either electronically or on paper. Our images are scanned at 400dpi, so the printed output is of outstanding quality.

3. How can I use FloodScape™ maps with my appraisal program?

Most popular appraisal software packages allow you to insert a FloodScape™ right into an appraisal report. You can either paste the image from your clipboard or import it directly from a file. First, you must add a blank map form in your appraisal report where you would like to place the FloodScape™. From the "FloodScape™ Results" screen on our website, select JPG, TIF, or PNG as the image format and click View.

Pasting From the Clipboard: While the FloodScape™ image is displayed in your browser, right click on the image and select Copy. Next, right-click in the blank form you just inserted in your appraisal report and select Paste. If your software has an "Insert From Clipboard" option, use it instead.

Importing From a File: While the FloodScape™ image is displayed in your browser, right click on the image and select "Save As..." Save the file in bitmap format by selecting this option from the drop down list. Remember where you saved the image and what you named the file. From the blank form you just inserted, select the "Import From File" feature in your appraisal software and choose the file you just saved.

Some appraisal software packages allow you to import image formats other than bitmap. In this case you may select any compatible image format from our website and select download. Then use your software’s "Import From File" feature as described above. We are not aware of any appraisal software package that supports importing of PDF format.

4. Why am I having difficulty opening the FloodScape™ PDF file?

For reasons unknown, the connection between Adobe Acrobat and Internet Explorer occasionally ‘breaks’ and Acrobat has to be reinstalled to work properly. Click here to get the latest version of Acrobat. Once you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, the FloodScape™ maps should automatically load. If you continue to have problems, please email us at support@floodsource.com.

6. When I get to the log on page I get the error "The page cannot be displayed", how do I fix this problem?

At FloodSource.com we use industry standard SSL (Secure Socket Layer) 128-bit encryption to protect your private information such as credit card numbers, contact information, Floodscape™ and Flood Hazard Determinations™ images generated from our web site. We feel that a high level of security is important to our customers and in turn important to us. While most browsers do not have problems with our site's level of encryption, some of our users cannot connect to our secure pages. Unfortunately for those who are having this problem we can only recommend upgrading their browser to one that will support this higher level of security. The newest versions of Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer support 128-bit encryption and are recommended for our web site. If you have one of these browsers installed on your computer, then follow these procedures to make sure your browser is configured correctly.
